A Children's Book Journey (Part 1)

I am busy drawing and colouring in Photoshop. If I have time I am hoping to drop by the Toronto Comic Arts Festival today. If you like illustration, cartoons and graphic novels, it's a wonderful event (and free)!

Below is a happy cat, overjoyed to see its "owner" at the end of the day. It's a detail from a children's book illustration that I am working on.

As some of you know I have been busy with grad school (working towards an MFA) and have been illustrating my first children's book (I also have a full time job!).  The kid's book is lots of fun and I am actually coming close to the end. In another week or so ALL the illustrations will be completed, and submitted.

I haven't said much about it but will once everything is sent to my wonderful editor (soon!). When she gives me the go-ahead to share info about the book, I will post more about it. I can tell you that it will be out in Spring 2015 and the publisher is Holiday House.

The offer came in autumn 2013 and soon after I received this BEAUTIFUL book from the people at Holiday House and a note from John Briggs, the President!  Holiday House has been publishing children's books since 1935 and their logo is a drawing by Ernest H. Shepard (illustrated Winnie the Pooh and Wind in the Willows). Love it.

It's been a great journey so far and I am lucky to have people in my life who are also involved in the world of children's books.

One of those is Debbie Ohi, who was also a first time kid's book illustrator a year or so ago (her second book, "Naked" has just been published). She is a multi-talented writer, illustrator and social media expert and always such a delight to chat with! Also have wonderful prof's and classmates (many of whom are published kid's book illustrators) who offer their suggestions and support.

If you are interested in writing and/or illustrating children's books I recommend being a member of SCBWI and Canscaip as both offer lots of information (and connections with others in the industry).

OK that's it for now.... back to work I go as I need to finish the cover art and the end papers.  More updates soon.
